Itineraries

So whether you come to Kilkenny because you're interested in the rich history or the vibrant culture, maybe even the scenic landscapes, one thing is for sure: you won't leave disappointed. Here are some itineraries presented, from daylong jaunts to a whole week's exploration to really get beneath the skin of the county.

One-Day Historic Kilkenny Tour:

  • Morning: Begin the day with a guided tour of the magnificent Kilkenny Castle; consider visiting some grand rooms while there are parklands around.
  • Afternoon: Make the stroll of the Medieval Mile out to St Canice’s Cathedral and do go up its round tower for all-around city views. First, have lunch at some delightful café around Kilkenny before proceeding to the Smithwick’s Experience for a small sample of the history of local brewing.
  • Evening: Cap the day with dinner at one of the highly regarded restaurants in the city and cap it off with a traditional music-filled night located in some local pub.

Two-Day Arts and Crafts Exploration:

  • Day 1: You will visit the National Craft Gallery and Kilkenny Design Centre to get a proper outlook on the arts scene. After, in the afternoon, search for some creative studios around the city, meeting with artisans, and perhaps you will have time to participate in a workshop.
  • Day 2: Craft workshop visit in one of the country’s pottery centers—e.g., Bennettsbridge. Return to Kilkenny City for an evening performance at the Watergate Theatre—or sometime during the Kilkenny Arts Festival.

Three-Day Family Adventure:

  • Day 1: Travel to Gowran to visit the Reptile Zoo, then travel further to Castlecomer Discovery Park for an afternoon spent high up on adrenalin-filled zip lines and canoeing on the lake.
  • Day 2: Ample time to explore the ancient formations of Dunmore Caves; then, having spent the afternoon at the playground of Kilkenny Castle, have an early dinner and take it easy with a gentle stroll along the River Nore.
  • Day 3: Pretty Village Day. Visit Inistioge with the family for a picnic and rest by the river. Afterwards, why not take a leisurely stroll around Woodstock Gardens and the Arboretum?

Week-Long Kilkenny Experience:

Combine the above itineraries and add:

  • A leisurely day exploring the historic sites of Jerpoint Abbey and the Kilfane Glen and Waterfall. Experience one of the county’s famous festivals by visiting during the event schedules to get a truly local experience. Spend a day following with a guided cycle tour, taking in the tranquil scenery as you travel along the River Barrow and visit riverside towns.
